oklahoma wind: the course variable you can't train away

Oklahoma wind is a real thing. The state sits in the Great Plains wind corridor, and Oklahoma City's late-April conditions can include sustained south winds of 15 to 20 mph with gusts higher. One experienced OKC runner described the "typical OKC spring conditions: warm, humid, and a 20 mph south wind blasting you in the face for the entire second half of the race."

Wind affects marathon running differently than hills or heat. You can train for hills by running hills. You can prepare for heat by acclimatizing. Wind is a race-day variable that you discover when you step outside on Sunday morning, and it either cooperates or it doesn't. On a calm day, the OKC course runs like a moderately hilly urban marathon. On a windy day, it runs like a moderately hilly urban marathon with an invisible hand pushing against you for every exposed mile.

The course has both sheltered and exposed sections. Downtown and the tree-lined residential neighborhoods (Nichols Hills, Mesta Park, Heritage Hills) provide some wind protection. The more open sections, including the stretches near the State Capitol and the northern reaches of the course, are exposed to whatever the plains are sending.

Race-day weather ranges from ideal (low 50s, calm, overcast) to challenging (low 70s, humid, windy). The average temperature range of 54°F to 74°F is wider than most spring marathons, reflecting Oklahoma's weather variability. Some years are perfect. Others are hard.

The preparation: check the forecast, but don't panic. If wind is forecast, plan to run by effort rather than pace, particularly on exposed sections. Tuck behind other runners when possible. Accept that a windy day will cost you 2 to 5 minutes compared to a calm day, and adjust your expectations accordingly.
