nashville as a race weekend destination

Nashville doesn't need a marathon to attract visitors. The city draws 14+ million tourists per year on the strength of its music scene, food, nightlife, and culture. The marathon gives runners an excuse to be there, and the city gives them a reason to stay.

The music. Broadway's honky-tonks are the famous ones, but Nashville's music scene extends far beyond the neon strip. The Bluebird Cafe (songwriters in the round), the Ryman Auditorium (the "Mother Church of Country Music"), the Grand Ole Opry, and dozens of smaller venues across the city offer live music every night of the week. Race weekend coincides with the end of Nashville's spring event season, so the city is buzzing.

The food. Hot chicken is the headline act: Hattie B's, Prince's, Bolton's. Beyond that, Nashville has become a genuine food city: craft cocktails in The Gulch, Southern fine dining in Germantown, brunch everywhere. The biscuit game is strong. The post-race nutrition strategy writes itself.

The neighborhoods. The course runs through several of Nashville's best, and seeing them on foot gives you a reason to come back. 12 South for coffee and boutiques. East Nashville for craft beer and local restaurants. The Gulch for design and dining. Germantown for history.

The logistics. Nashville's airport (BNA) is 15 minutes from downtown. Hotels are plentiful (book early for race weekend; Nashville is always busy). The expo at Music City Center is downtown and well-organized. Old Town Trolley provides shuttle service from partner hotels to the start line.

The vibe. Nashville on a race weekend is Nashville turned up half a notch. The bachelorette parties are still on Broadway. The pedal taverns are still rolling. But mixed in with the usual Nashville energy are 25,000 people wearing race shirts, comparing pacing strategies, and carbo-loading at every restaurant in The Gulch. It's a runner's weekend in a city that knows how to host.
